I am now the proud adopter of Lucie the tearaway terrier. Playful, friendly, good with other dogs and children. Like a bullet after a ball and brings it back, mostly. Prey mad though!

My First Raku Firing

 My first experience of raku firing. The gas hose is inserted

 Thermometer in the opposite side. We went up to 980 only.

 The science fiction mask for viewing the pots through the chimney.

 I didn't get a photo of the kiln once it's ready but the top is lifted off and pots are taken with tongues and put into sawdust in a pit or metal bucket. The sawdust ignites, causing reactions in the glazes and a darkening of the clay body.

 Springle with water to get some areas to cool more quickly

then plunge into a bucket of water.

 It was such a great day!

 Each firing was really exciting as results were so unpredictable.

The three glazes offered the potential of rich turquoise,

crackle and metalic effects.

A great bunch of people,

in a lovely setting,

delicious food

and the best weather we've had for weeks.

A big thank you to Ros and Emma! 

Blessed with a visit from beautiful Edmund too.

It is a tricky process and I do have 3 out of my 5 pots severely cracked

but I am very happy.

They have lovely qualities and we all had fun.

I'll post pics of my pots when I have the energy to photograph them.

Time for some more "hound art".

The elegant lines and patina of these various old pieces suit the subject so well.

Miquel Aparici's website contains many such characterful creatures in 3D and 2D.

I love to see artists bring inanimate objects to life. There's something special about seeing the potential in an object or a shape and using your imagination to create something new,

as does David Kemp . 

 Remember these hounds?.

David Kemp - Hounds of Geevor

Whilst searching for something or other I came across these little chaps.





Made from the old work boots of Cornish tin miners.

David Kemp makes wonderfully humorous and thought provoking pieces from ... well junk, basically. Take a look at his website to see lots more work and be sure to watch the video to see the hounds' girlfriends - the "well heeled bitches". He has a disarming approach to the making of art. His work is approachable and appealing, at the same time loaded with ..... stuff.

Dog's Life

If you take a dog into your care you need to have a lifestyle to suit the dog's needs as well as your own. I work full time and I'm out each day, often for long hours - not dog friendly. I look after others' dogs from time to time but I hope I can make a life that a dog can fit into one day.

Puppy Love

I like looking into people's rooms and getting glimspes of their "behind the scenes" life. Rather than polished and dressed views, I prefer to see wear and tear on objects and furnishings and the signs that reveal people's ordinary sides (even important, famous, big shot, genius, artist people) . So I picked up a book, "Inside Job" with David Dawson's photographs of Lucian Freud's studio, to have a nosey.

I was struck by the pups.

I love the colours in these photographs. I can almost smell the paint.

A bit of internet searching revealed articles expanding on Freud's fondness of animals:

There's something very satisfying about seeing creatures enjoy a comfy bed, a warm spot in the sun or a scratch behind the ear - almost as good as experiencing it yourself.
